Aerial Hammock

Aerial Hammocks are one of the most beautiful, fluid types of aerial dancing. It’s seen in acrobatic recitals, circuses, modern burlesque venues, and contemporary art shows. This form of aerial dancing involves a hammock made of strong fabric hung from the ceiling in which you, as the performer, twist, twirl, and pose within as you climb up and down during your routine.

Aerial hammocks strengthen your core, as does pole dancing and fitness, and constantly extends and contracts your muscles to build muscle, improve posture, and align joints. Many people use pole dancing as a prelude to performing on an aerial hammock.

Silks

Aerial silk dancing is breathtaking, truly creating art through motion and fabric. While the hammock is suspended on either end, a silk is only hung from one end. This allows the dancer to spin, twist, contort, slide, swing, and drop nearly the entire length of the silk.

It takes bravery and courage to perform on aerial silks. Pole dancing is a great start to building up the balance, strength, endurance, agility, and rhythm needed for a successful aerial silk routine.

Flying pole

Similar to the hammock, a pole is hung from the ceiling for a dancer to “fly” on and around on stage. This form of aerial acrobatics can be considered an evolution to traditional pole dancing, or at least an inversion (since it’s attached to the ceiling, not the floor).

Pole dancing with a flying pole takes incredible core strength and coordination. Balancing your body while controlling the pole is a feat to be proud of, and when executed correctly it creates a stunning acrobatic scene.

Lyra

This form is also known as an aerial hoop. It’s suspended from the ceiling and allows the dancer to perform a number of routines either while the lyra is still, spinning, or swinging. While the range of motion is less than what you’ll see on a silk or hammock, the lyra still creates the platform for a wide range of acrobatic dances or stunts.

Performances on the lyra focus heavily on balance. Finding your center of balance in any position is key to proper suspension whether your hanging from your feet, wrapped around with one arm, or folded and hanging by your hands. Practicing with pole dancing helps you find your center of balance so you can perform these acrobatic maneuvers with comfort, confidence, and style.

CONTORTION

Contortion is a circus performance discipline that focusses majorly on the extreme flexibility of the performer. Those that perform contortion are called Contortionists. At their highest level their training parallels the same amount of discipline as many of the world’s top athletes. Practicing contortion takes huge amounts of discipline from the participants. Contortion acts are composed of multiple tricks along with transitions between static poses which are then held comfortably and confidently to demonstrate the apex of the contortionist’s flexibility.

YOGA

Yoga is an ancient system of physical, mental and spiritual practices that have been passed down through the generations from teacher to student. Yoga practices include breathing techniques, postures, relaxation, chanting, and other meditation methods. There are many different styles of yoga, each with their own unique focus and approach to creating a unitive state.
